How do I update my website from Google Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4?

Applies to: All themes.

Google will stop processing Universal Analytics (UA) on 1 July 2023. Customers should create a new Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property before then.

Although the cut-off is July 2023, the earlier you migrate, the more historical data and insights you will have in Google Analytics 4. It seems that UA data does not carry over to GA4. You can choose to run both UA and GA4 on your Publish website if you wish. The advantage in this is the ability to view historical data in UA until GA4 has been running long enough to gather useful historical data of its own.

Once you have made the switch to GA4 in your Google account, you need to update the code in your website:

  • Sign in to your website's admin area
  • Go to Settings > Integrations > Third Party Integrations
  • Click Edit on Google Tag Manager > paste your new code snippet into the 'Google Tag Manager code' field, and click Update.

Although the cut-off is July 2023, the earlier you migrate, the more historical data and insights you will have in Google Analytics 4.
