How to publish a digital edition PDF

Applies to: All themes 

Options to paywall a digital editions section:

  • Section paywall: Turn Premium on for the entire digital edition section, and add a PDF link to each article card. 
  • Article paywall: Turn Premium on for individual articles, and add a PDF link in the body copy of each article. 


Options to publish a digital edition PDF:

  1. Add a link to the PDF in the article body. On click, the PDF will open in a new window. 
  2. Add a link to the PDF to a card. When the card is clicked, the PDF will open in a new window. 
  3. Display the full PDF directly in the article. PDFs in-article must be under 10MB. 
     


1. Add a link to the PDF in the article body

  • In the Asset Manager:
    • Upload the PDF and name it something that will make it easy to find later 
    • Assign to a 'Digital editions' collection (optional) 
  • Create an article for the digital edition, eg 'Digital edition #21':
    • If the article will be paywalled your link needs to appear after the 'paywall overlay'. For example, an introduction like:
      Welcome to this week's edition.
      In this edition:
      Feature 1
      Feature 2

      Click here to view the PDF
    • To add the PDF link, click 'Add asset as link' in the editor: 
    • Select your PDF and a link like this will appear: https://d3pbdxdl8c65wb.cloudfront.net/n/573/2023/Mar/23/Transform your website.pdf
    • Copy that link to your pasteboard 
    • Highlight your text prompt (eg: Click here to view the PDF), click the 'Link' icon and paste in the PDF link URL. Here is an example.
    • Save or Publish
       

2. Add a link to the PDF to a card

  • In the Asset Manager:
    • Upload the PDF and name it something that will make it easy to find later 
    • Assign to a 'Digital editions' collection (optional) 
  • Create an article for the digital edition, eg 'Digital edition #21:
    • Add some text to the body copy. This text will not be seen, but all articles must contain at least a single character to be published. 
    • To access the PDF link, click 'Add asset as link' in the editor: 
    • Select your PDF and a link like this will appear:https://d3pbdxdl8c65wb.cloudfront.net/n/573/2023/Mar/23/Transform your website.pdf
    • Copy that link to your pasteboard 
    • Now go across to the tab Advanced > External URL > paste in the PDF link 
  • Publish. When the card is clicked, the PDF will open in a new window.
     

3. Display the full PDF in the article

  • Important: PDFs in-article should be kept under 10MB. 
  • In the Asset Manager:
    • Upload the PDF and name it something that will make it easy to find later 
    • Assign to a 'Digital editions' collection (optional) 
  • Create an article for the digital edition, eg 'Digital edition #21':
    • If the article will be paywalled, your link should be after the 'paywall overlay'. See below for a page example. You could include an introduction line like:
      Welcome to this week's edition.
      In this edition:
      - Feature 1
      - Feature 2
    • To find the PDF link, click 'Add asset as link' in the editor: 
    • Select your PDF and you will see a link like this: https://d3pbdxdl8c65wb.cloudfront.net/n/573/2023/Mar/23/Transform your website.pdf
    • Copy that link to your pasteboard 
    • Now click on 'Insert media embed':
    • Paste the PDF link into the URL field. Save and Preview. 
    • Publish
